"Transfusion" was one of two paintings awarded a monetary art prize for "Most Innovative" in the ScienceOnline2012, Sci-Art show which took place last week at North Carolina State University and Duke University.

Although its rare that I enter juried shows these days, I am really interested in exploring the emerging field of Science and Art. I was very happy to be chosen to be included in the show and for the new connections I have made. The show received sponsorship from Rob Dunn ( thank you Rob!) from Your Wild Life Lab. and 6 monetary prizes were announced in 3 categories;

Most Innovative
Best able to convey complex ideas
Best science art having to do with daily life

This is the first show that I have participated in that awarded prizes and I was pleasantly surprised to have been awarded one! A big thank you to Karyn Traphagen and Glendon Mellow for organizing , curating and co-judging the show and a big Congratulations to the other artists who won awards.

BEAN Dinner results.....
We had a wonderful time at the BEAN Micro-Grant Dinner with over 65 attendees. It was a successful night raising over $750. which was split between two projects; One, for an organization which provides art classes to low income children and the other, for a middle school chorus to travel to an event. As attendees we had over 15 proposals to review before we could vote on the two we wanted the funds to go to.

The dinner from Elliot Street Cafe was great...actually I think they make the best brownies I have ever eaten!!!!

The band Red Heart the Ticker was awesome!! I am thinking about getting a CD to play in my studio while I paint. I really enjoyed watching the small children dancing with total abandon!

Brattleboro Essential Arts Network (BEAN) Micro-Grant Dinner Tonight!

I will be attending this event tonight to present my finished project and to support the next round of micro-grant applicants. This is a wonderful program for artists. I know first hand how a small grant can help a project become more successful.

The Brattleboro Museum & Art Center and the Elliot Street Café are teaming up to empower our community to take arts philanthropy into its own hands.Based on similar programs happening all around the world, BEAN Micro-Grant Dinners enhance the vitality of art and artists in our community by providing artists with much-needed financial support and encouraging dialogue and collaborative decision-making between artists and the general public.BEAN, which stands for “Brattleboro Essential Arts Network,” also aims to change the face of arts funding -- from a top-down model with limited interaction between funders and recipients to one that features direct, personal contact between donors and their beneficiaries, allowing virtually anyone to become a philanthropist.

The next BEAN Dinner will take place Sunday, January 22, 2012 from 6 to 7:30 pm.

HOW IT WORKS, PART 1: Eat, Discuss, Vote

For only $12 anyone can attend a Mexican dinner catered and served by the Elliot Street Cafe, with live music by Red Heart the Ticker. Over dinner, guests will review and discuss funding requests for local art-related projects. At the end of the night, guests will vote for one or more proposals that deserve to receive the proceeds from the event.

A New Song to Sing

We are 20 days into the new year..2012!! and I am just getting around to that New Years post.

Although I have one last surgery to attend to with my leg from last years break, I am feeling a new beginning, a new phase in my life that is opening....I have the feeling of being ripe with possibility and it's overwhelming me! This is my new painting in progress....tentatively named A New Song to Sing, in the spirit of letting go of the past and moving forward into the great unknown.

I am very interested in the emerging field of science/Art.

I am just starting to research the diverse possibilities this kind of collaboration can create......And I find it all very exciting.

It was a pleasure to have my work accepted in the Sci-Art show, which is taking place now at the ScienceOnline2012 conference at North Carolina State University in conjunction with Duke University.

The Artwork will be projected onto a large cinematic screen during the conference and viewed by over 450+ scientists, science journalists, science artists and science advocates. This show will also have an online exhibition component that I will post a link to when it is announced.

A slide show/video can be found on the Art of Science blog Symbiartic, written by Glendon Mellow who co-curated the show with Karyn Traphagen.

ScienceOnline2012 is the sixth annual international meeting on Science and the Web. It's Friday the 13th and I'm Feeling Lucky!

I've had a feeling of lucky anticipation all day.......maybe it is because I am going to show a new piece in progress tomorrow at my Hampden Gallery Critique group which I will be attending for the first time since the accident or is it because I was expecting the unexpected?...after all I do believe that anything is possible! (Note...I will be buying a lottery ticket tonight!)

Well something wonderfully surprising did happen......I came across this article in Artscope magazine about Brattleboro's Gallery walk and lo and behold my paintings are in it! This is a photo taken at Gallery in the Woods, during my Nov. - Dec. Solo show. Even though my show is over the gallery has kept most of the work for a strong showing for the Winter/Spring season.

Science Online 2012 is the sixth annual international meeting on science and the Web.

Every January since 2007, the Research Triangle area of North Carolina has hosted scientists, students, educators, physicians, journalists, librarians, bloggers, programmers and others interested in the way the World Wide Web is changing the way science is communicated, taught and done.

ScienceOnline2012 will take place January 19-21, 2012 on the campus of N.C. State University.

As in all the previous years, the meeting will be held in an ‘un-conference’ style – the program is built beforehand with the help of participants on the planning wiki, and the sessions are designed to foster conversations and discussions among everyone in the room rather than a traditional one-before-many lecture approach.

Artist in Progress

My solo show at Gallery in the Woods is ending soon...so this week will be your last chance to see it in its current form. The good news is that the gallery will be keeping most of the work for a strong presence during the winter season. I hope to be rotating some new work into the display as well during this time period.

My Nature Angel painting, which I painted in about 2006/07, was featured in Gallery in the Woods December window display Sold the other day. She has found a new home. I know she will bring many blessings to her new owner.

I am so happy be working in my studio space again!.... although I can not stand for very long when I am painting, It is helping me to build up my strength and stamina again post accident by adding a little more time to my painting practice each day.

Lastly I have work featured in the Worcester Windows "Light Up the Night" exhibition located at the Hanover Theater. It will be there untill Spring 2012. I am showing Gateway a 32"x 32" mixed media piece from my Inherent Divinity series was painted in 2009.

The Altered Book

I like to get out of my comfort zone in the studio and participate in several types of group shows at least a few times each year. I appreciate getting the chance to look at what I am exploring in my work through new eyes….via a new medium, process, format, or theme….or to just get the chance to contemplate something totally different.
I created this altered book for a group show that is now on view at Hampden Gallery, A Novel Idea, runs through Feb. 19, 2012. A catalog of the show will be available.

Title of my piece: In Praise of Non-Conformity

Name of the book altered: “Know and Follow Rules” by Cheri J. Meiners M.Ed.

Catalog statement:
In the burning of the book “Know and Follow the Rules” I attempt to make a statement on the impact of conformity and the unhappiness that it causes in our contemporary society. Strikingly, the process I had to go through to complete the burning paralleled the process we all must go through to incorporate change in ourselves and in the grander scheme of life, the changes that we need to go through to transform society. I was not able to burn the book all at once, I had to first deconstruct the book and burn it piece by piece, rule by rule. Stopping after each page to stir and re-light the smoldering darkness that remained at the bottom of the container. Alchemically transformed to the dust of the past, this jar of ash is a testament that change is possible. That we can all transform our beliefs and patterns of behavior so that we may honor our differences and know that they make us beautiful in our uniqueness. In that uniqueness we all have something to contribute.

May all beings be happy and find joy!

Alicia Adams Hunsicker: Moments of Creation.

The artist says of her work: "Originally evolving from the idea of a moment in time where thought is transformed into matter, these paintings capture not only the energy of creation but also decay. I am fascinated by nature's repeating patterns and see these forms as part of a cosmic language that links humanity to the Divine and shows our interconnectedness." Hunsicker's transformative compositions recontextualize the inner structures of the human body, exposing them in a colorful, alluring, abstracted landscape. Nature Angel Adorns Gallery in the Woods' Holiday Window

Wow, is it really almost December?

My painting Nature Angel (a popular favorite) will be gracing Gallery in the Woods holiday window display this year.

Painted in 2005/06. She has a custom built archway frame, painted in gold and black and built by fellow artist James Whitbeck, a realist still life painter.

She was one of my first attempts a capturing “Glow” in my paintings. At the time, I traveled to lots of area churches to take photos of stained glass windows for research.

I have loved living with her powerful presence and beauty the last few years and there has always been lots of interest in her but its time that she found her forever home! That said, In the spirit of the holiday season, while she is at Gallery in the Woods, I am offering her at a special price of $2800. Well below her normal price range. During noiseless moments when the clatter of human endeavor and steel and spinning tires and rail yards and computer keys subsides, and my mind latches onto the occasion of a thoughtless space, I have, periodically — through no effort of my own — bumped against a peculiar ethereal buzz, one that seems to resonate and vibrate under the heavy cloak of the mundane world.

One could call this crystalline drip “God.” One could call it an alternate dimension existing alongside our own. Or, perhaps it is a subconscious awareness, made tangible, of the humming atomic fury binding every particle of our world, at once invisible and omnipresent.

Alicia Hunsicker simply calls it “art.”...........

Opening Night Fun @ Gallery in the Woods

I had a wonderful time at the opening for my show “Moments of Creation” now showing at Gallery in the Woods until Dec 31, 2011 (there is still lots of time to view the show if you couldn't make it out to the opening J ) It was jammed packed with patrons and the Moon Dogs rocked the night away! I was especially impressed with all the Leyden peeps in attendance! Thanks so much for all who were able to come out to see the show. I may decide to attend the next Gallery walk on Friday, Dec. 2^nd, (weather permitting) for those of you who would like another chance to talk with me about the work. There may be a few more new pieces added to the collection at that point as well!

This is me at the opening with one of my many male admirers. LOL… notice the crutches….I am paying for it now but I stood the whole night! I will hopefully be walking without them in 4 to 6 weeks and I am really looking forward to being able to drive again.

Moments of Creation Opening Reception Tonight!

Well tonight's the night of my opening reception at Gallery in the Woods that premiers my 2011 painting series "Moments of Creation" 6:30 to 8:30 pm. I am looking forward to seeing friends and meeting new ones!

I had a pleasant surprise yesterday when I was contacted by journalist, Clara Rose Thornton telling me that a feature article that she wrote about me came out in the Rutland Herald, titled Spirit and form: Alicia Hunsicker's Moments of Creation. We ran up to Brattleboro last night to secure some copies and it was well worth the trip! Clara has a wonderful penetrating writing style that explores not only the paintings but the artist (or whoever she is writing about) as well. The Artscope Magazine interview will also be distributed today and I am looking forward to getting a copy.

To Quote Clara she says "Today's piece, on newsstands in the Rutland Herald. Here is a second tackling of the fascinating magical realist painter, Alicia Hunsicker Artist. As opposed to her ArtScope profile, wherein I attempt a colorful recreation of my subject's philosophy, here, I take many fun snapshots. Whereas in ArtScope, I attempt to paint a portrait, in the Herald I'm sketching whimsical outlines."

My favorite time of year where the veil between worlds is thinnest.

I am the proud momma of Frodo Baggins today J

The work drop off to Gallery in the Woods went well despite the 2 feet of snow that was dumped in our neighborhood. I actually delivered the work on Sat. instead of Sunday the scheduled drop off day and I am really glad I did. We were with out power from the storm for a little over 24 hours…..Which is actually not as long as we are used to going after a bad storm. There have been times where we have been with out power for over a week. I am happy this was not one of those times!

Four days and counting to my opening on Nov. 4^th! I have been housebound with a broken leg for so long it seems and am a little nervous about being out and about never mind the center of attention. I was able to go up Main St. Brattleboro with my crutches on drop off day so it will probably be ok to get around for the opening night….I will just have to rest up.

I also can’t wait for the article to come out in Artscope Magazine…I tentatively heard that it comes out the same day as the opening (on the 4^th).

In the studio I have started 2 new paintings and am working on ideas for my altered Book for the show at Hampden Gallery also coming right up!

From Mind to Matter

I just put the last brush stroke on this sweet little painting From Mind to Matter, 8" x 11", oil on board, 2011. I hope it will be dry for the work drop off on Sunday....one week away! All that is left to do is wait for varnish to dry and decide on prices.

On the 30th I will load the car and deliver it to Gallery in the Woods for my solo show which opens Nov., 4th from 6:30 to 8:30 pm. I hope that I am able to walk a little better for the opening!

I was surprised to find out that a large group of Leyden-ites will be carpooling to the opening
:-) Its wonderful to be a part of such a supportive community!

I was delighted to be contacted by Clara Rose Thornton, Arts Journalist, Cultural Critic and Editor, to interview me for an in-depth preview article for Artscope magazine about my upcoming show at Gallery in the Woods.

Amongst my paintings and a table of delicious munchies we immersed ourselves in interesting conversations about life, art, painting, and spirituality.

I enjoyed meeting this lovely, free spirited, talented writer who’s activities this weekend alone included, an Occupy Brattleboro rally, reviews of the Literary Festival also happening in Brattleboro and a studio visit / interview with me. A busy freelance writer for sure!

I am looking forward to reading her piece about my work in the Nov./Dec. issue of Artscope magazine. Artscope is a vibrant, dynamic magazine with arts news and reviews, available for pick up at over 700 museum, gallery, university, and commercial locations across New England!

The Creative Life in Leyden
When thinking of small-town artists, paintings of landscapes, farm buildings and animals may come to mind, but the abstract work of three Leyden artists couldn't be further from folksy.
Maybe it's something in the water, or maybe it's the serenity of the hills, but whatever the cause, something about the little town of less than 900 residents seems to foster creativity. The following three artists, as well as several others, have made Leyden their home.

Alicia Hunsicker
Working from a home studio in Leyden, Alicia Hunsicker uses a variety of media to create her art. She works in oil paints, digital photography, Xerox transfers, and acrylic under-paintings, done on paper, board or canvas.
Her painting, "Moments of Creation," sets neurons against a multi-colored backdrop, with orbs that could be interpreted as thoughts in the making.
"My interest lies in using patterns found both in nature and the body -- brain neurons and tree roots, for example," she said. "My current themes are inner and outer, micro and macro, and materialization and dematerialization. They all evolve from the idea of the moment of creation, when a thought manifests into form."
Hunsicker says her style is based on realism, with things placed in a surreal way, in what some would call a "visionary style," but feels that her work can't be categorized.
Her "Inherent Divinity" series can be seen in the Worcester Windows Summer Exhibition presented by Worcester State University, now through Nov. 30.
"In this work, I transform the eye and hand into symbols that represent the divine," she said. "This series is more than just an exploration of the divine spark in us all; it's about the creative process and about mapping of self. (The pieces in the series) are mixed media works on paper."
Hunsicker has received several grants and awards for her work and, last summer, she was invited to a month-long residency at the Vermont Studio Center in Johnson, Vt. There, she was one of 50 artists from around the world who were given an apartment, studio and meals to allow them to concentrate on their work.
This fall, she will feature about eight paintings from her "Moments of Creation" series in a solo show at the Gallery in the Woods, in Brattleboro, Vt. The show will start on the day of the town's monthly "First Friday Gallery Walk" Nov. 4, and run through Dec. 31.

All the Little Details...

This past week and for the next few weeks I will be attending to all the little details it takes to be ready for a solo show: updating artist statements, writing P.R. and sending it out, printing mailing labels and stamping the post cards, sending them out, Finishing paintings, doing final coats of varnish, mounting works on paper, cleaning edges, photographing work....etc..etc....
(take deep breath now)

All the while getting out the end of Sept/beginning of Oct. grant and fellowship deadlines, which are many! I am soooooo busy, but am glad for the distractions so I cant even think about being mostly housebound with my broken leg. I am thankful for the work and deadlines!

This is a new painting in progress that I hope to be able to finish for the show.

Worcester Windows is a community gallery program which uses storefronts throughout downtown Worcester as exhibit space to enhance the City’s downtown and to provide display opportunities for local emerging and established artists. Originally intended simply as a means to provide exhibit opportunities, Worcester Windows has grown dramatically, successfully raising the awareness of Worcester as a Creative City by not only bringing artwork to the public and showcasing local talent, but in also establishing itself as a true community gallery through which many of the exhibiting artists have sold works.

Its been a while since I have blogged.....The Chain Letter show was unfortunately more eventful than planned! Here's the story:

I fell in a pothole on the sidewalk in Boston and broke both bones in my leg right above the ankle. I spent a week at Boston Medical Ctr. and two surgeries later I found myself having to stay with family for aftercare and one story living. A month after the accident I moved home (two weeks ago) but am limited to one floor. I will not be able to put weight on my foot for another 6 weeks. The recovery time is long but I am mending well and getting a little painting done in my living room as the studio is downstairs :-(.
I did miss some opportunities because of the accident but I decided to keep on track for my solo show dates at Gallery in the Woods. Thankfully I was in great shape before the accident.

The Opening Reception will be Friday, November 4th, 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

The Pioneer Valley News magazine contacted me last week and asked to use an image of a painting in the orb series that they liked. They will be using this painting for the cover of this months edition.

This week I found out that I was awarded a grant from the Artists' Fellowship of NYC.

Yesterday I met with an Art Director from CT. It was one of the best studio visits ever! I really enjoyed my visit with her.

Tomorrow I will be traveling to Boston to the Sampson projects to drop off work for the Chain Letter show. (which has been very mysterious!!!) I hope to have a good experience to report later this week!

Lastly...I am really excited about the new work that is happening in the studio and I cant wait to share it ....Soon!!!

I delivered a commission today that I spent the last year painting.

It felt great to finish it and see the owner light up upon seeing it in final form for the first time.

A sense of freedom to move onto new projects was present for both of us.

When I returned home the painting's absence in the studio was palpable....the empty easel where it stood for the last year is waiting to be filled again. I get so much from the creative process, even the emptiness is good! Though this time the emptiness is fleeting, as I have lots of work going on right now and can use the space that has been created for those paintings.

Friday I drove out to Worcester with a fellow artist to have lunch with the gallery directors at Worcester State College and to meet a WSC art student and curator who wanted to meet me and talk about painting. We had a wonderful lunch and then headed into Worcester Center where I was able to see my paintings hanging in the windows of the Hanover Theatre. The Worcester Windows Community Gallery program provides a wonderful opportunity for regional artists to showcase their work and gain exposure by transforming storefront windows into exhibition space. This community art gallery not only beautifies the city, but also encourages a greater appreciation and awareness of the arts. I was invited to participate in the the next Worcester Windows exhibition, an invitational show that will run August 1, through December 1, 2011.

I feel much gratitude for all who came out to support me last night;

BEAN Micro-Grant Dinner Yields Funds for Artist Alicia Hunsicker

Attendees at the May 23 BEAN (“Brattleboro Essential Arts Network”) Micro-Grant Dinner at the Brattleboro Museum & Art Center awarded a grant of $300 to artist Alicia Hunsicker of Leyden, Mass. According to Hunsicker, the funds will help cover the cost of printing and mailing a large full-color postcard advertising her upcoming exhibition at Brattleboro’s Gallery in the Woods. This was the seventh BEAN micro-grant awarded since the program began last fall, and it was the first to be given directly to an artist, as opposed to an arts organization or school group.

According to BMAC Director Danny Lichtenfeld, approximately 30 people paid $10 each to attend dinner at the museum. Over dinner, which was donated and served by Brattleboro’s Elliot Street Café, guests read and discussed six proposals submitted in advance and then voted for the one most deserving of the dinner proceeds. “I was very impressed by the thoughtful discussions that took place over dinner,” said Lichtenfeld. “Everyone took their responsibilities as philanthropists and community decision-makers very seriously.”

Several guests expressed gratitude to BMAC and the Elliot Street Café for facilitating a program that simplifies the funding process for art projects, cuts out the middle man, and enables virtually anyone to have some measure of control over the vitality of art in their community. Dinner guest Anne LaPrade Seuthe said, “Simply having the opportunity to eat a meal in an art museum is a great thing. It makes the place feel so much more accessible and inviting.”

Alicia Hunsicker’s solo exhibition, entitled “Moments of Creation,” will be held at Gallery in the Woods this coming November and December. According to Hunsicker, the exhibition consists of “paintings that explore the moment of creation, when dark matter turns to matter, when a thought manifests the spark of life.” With funds to help publicize her exhibition, Hunsicker hopes more people will visit the gallery, perhaps purchase artwork, and also “discover the many delights that Main Street has to offer.”

Images of Osama take on new meaning at Aldrich

RIDGEFIELD -- In sepia and black, 157 images of Osama bin Laden are mounted in neat rows on the white walls of the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum.

In some, the beard is all black, in others, mostly red -- in some, the red stains the black. On some, cross marks stain his cheek like scars. In others, the markings look like jet planes. One has is a faded circle over much of bin Laden's head. With only a bit of imagination, it looks like a target.
Adam Calderone, of Newtown, a student at Western Connecticut State University in Danbury, saw the exhibit by artist James Esber a couple of weeks ago. He said he was interested in the technique -- how each of the 157 images, traced by 157 different people -- altered the Esber's original drawing.

Calderone revisited it Tuesday, the first time the Aldrich had been open since Navy SEALs ended bin Laden's life on Sunday. The sudden shift of history altered Calderone's perceptions about what he was seeing.

"It's different," he said. "It has more meaning."

Which doesn't surprise Esber, who lives in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Osama Bin Laden

It seems like my participation in the James Esber "This is not a Portrait" exhibit is timely with recent the death of Osama Bin Laden.

I drove out to the Aldrich Museum this past Sunday with fellow artist Anne Seuthe. We were both pleased to see our drawings incorporated into the exhibition. Here is a close up of my drawing, and another with some of the pieces that were hung near it.

All the pieces including my own will be incorporated into a video which I hope we will be able to see on-line at some point. The Exhibition will be at the Aldrich for a few more months and will then go to another venue.

Dakin Animal Shelter: My new Studio Cat

I am in Love with my new studio mate!

This past winter I lost my 9 year old cat Jasper to a bobcat attack. It was all pretty traumatizing at the time. A few weeks later when my son Ben was really missing having a pet, I brought him to the Dakin Animal Shelter in Leverett MA to play with the cats in the Play room they have there.

Of course we went back the next day to get one!!! I was glad we took the night though to really think about which cat would be best for us.....I would like to introduce you to my new Studio Cat Lovie :-) She is a Lover! and is living up to her new name. She is even prettier in person and resembles a Raccoon....or Coon Cat and has a huge plume of a tail.

Greenhouse or Studio?

Lately my studio has been looking a little more like a greenhouse!

I have been enjoying painting to the earthy smell of springtime and the colors, soft blues, new greens, and yellows are seeping into my palette.

Here in the foot hills of the Green Mountains, spring is just starting to pop as the leaves on the trees spread for the first time to see the sun.

I am excited about my new work and my new seedlings and looking forward to the bounty both will yield.

Draw On! @ The Aldrich, with James Esber

I was happy to be one of the 18 artists chosen to make new drawings in the series that will be included in Esber’s 2011 exhibition, at The Aldrich Museum.

On March 27, 2011, I attended the Draw On session where we had the pleasure of meeting artist James Esber (pictured here). He did a short talk about the show, and the importance that our individuality to come through in the drawings. Drawing was fun, there was a rhythm to his mark making which we were to paint over with our own style of mark making.

I have been working with circles (orbs) in my own work and wanted to incorporate that into my drawing. At the same time I had been thinking alot about the situation going on in Japan. I decided that one area in the piece would be a red circle and the rest would stay black.

Here I am working on my piece. We had a paint brush and two colors of ink black and red. We could do what we wanted while sticking to the parameters of the project

While we all started with the same materials, instructions, and base drawing, Every piece turned out different. After I finished my drawing I enjoyed discovering what the other artists did with their pieces.

This is my final piece that will be added to the exhibion.

New painting in progress

This is a new painting in progress. I am finding that something is different in my process. How I am thinking about painting has shifted. I am not even sure I can put it in words yet....but for example ....I used to think about (or not think just do)...light, line, shape, variegation, symmetry, and refinement.

Today it was rhythm, cadence, negative space to make the lines, painterly expression, and color placement.

I wonder!!!

Divinity Tree

I realized that there was one more image I hadn't posted yet that is currently being shown at Gallery in the Woods in Brattleboro, VT. A vision of this image came to me while visiting the studio of fellow artist Jim Doubleday in Pelham, MA while we were having one of our thought provoking conversations.

It was an image of a tree branches not up or down like roots and branches but one reaching across space (horizontally) constantly sprouting new branches and spreading out. I am still very interested in exploring this vision more in my work. Divinity Tree is a mixed media piece on paper. I used photography, Xerox transfers, Tea stains, and acrylic painting techniques.

Nayana Glazier contributes often unsettling and perceptive black and white paintings of pivotal psychological moments in the lives of women and girls. The almost cinematic play on motion creates an urgent, visceral experience of women’s collective life.

Denise Beaudet offers three of twelve large panels from her Roots to Resistance project, These are vigorous and inspiring symbolic portraits of women activists working across the globe. Posters and postcards which create a visual “voice” from the project have been internationally distributed, and the project has partnered with educational and prison groups across the country.

Sculptor Sara Pogue creates visionary beings that symbolize the intersection of earth,human, and beast—archetypal witnesses, guardians and mystics inspired by her study of psychology,Buddhism, and naturalist exploration.

Samantha Crawford shows visionary images with pen and ink on paper. These detailed pieces evoke illustration,and story line is the transpersonal experience in nature.

Great news today! I am excited to announce that I have been selected to produce a drawing for the

James Esber,
This is Not a Portrait Exhibition.

In conjunction with Artspace: New Haven the drawings will be shown at The Aldrich Museum of Contemporary Art, in Ridgefield, CT.

For the last several years, Esber has been collaborating with broad, diverse audiences to generate depictions of public figures, most notably Osama Bin Laden. The resulting ink and brush drawings are similar in that all the heads are exactly the same size and all contain the same number of lines.

Inherent Divinity series being shown this March at Gallery in the Woods

I have been working diligently in the Studio on the next few mixed media works in my Inherent Divinity Series. They will be showing soon at The Gallery in the Wood's Woman's Show. The opening is during the Brattleboro Gallery Walk on Friday, March 4th from 5:30 to 8:30 pm.

Here is a snippet from my artist statement about the work........

In my work I attempt to create a multi layered symbolic language pulled from the richness of my life experience. I want to confront the viewer and provoke thought. There are multiple meanings a symbol has depending on the viewer. I think of them as cultural-context-based as well as experiential with a personal history attached that precedes the viewer’s interpretation.

In the current mixed media work, based on the concept of Inherent Divinity, I transform the eye and hand into symbols that represent the Divine and the power of that force to be manifested into form through us. This series is more than just an exploration of the divine spark in us all, and the creative process, it is also about the mapping of self.

The common nature of these symbols guarantees that the audience will have multiple perspectives on what is being communicated. This is the human experience of perception which is in reality the essence of what I am exploring here. To punctuate my current topic of Inherent Divinity I also incorporate undercurrents of spirituality, sacred geometry, and mystery.

A Series of Unfortunate Events

Life has been throwing lots of craziness my way and I am aware that its been like that for a lot of people lately. Lets just say its been a series of unfortunate events! Actually, looking back on the last month I am really surprised how well I navigated through it all. BUT...there were also pleasant surprises as well....and that is what I am going to write about today.

So this farmer calls me and says I have a truck load of canvas for you. I say Wow great! but honestly I am thinking that I have just inherited a truck load of kindling. A little while later he is unloading 7 good sized canvases of which half have been painted on already...One was actually a painting of a urinal..LOL! I looked around and thought these are dirty, dirty canvases. (hummm.. now that is a good name for a show! "Dirty, Dirty, Canvas") LOL!

Upon further inspection I realised that these canvases are on 1 and 2 inch heavy duty museum quality gallery wrap stretcher bars...Jackpot!!!...Today I spent the day stripping the canvas off the stretcher bars and pulling out all the staples and I am totally psyched with what I am left with. Thank You Mr. Farmer! What a Gift!

Out of Darkness comes the Light ~ Sold

Along with the two new "orb" paintings that sold in early August, This painting was also purchased. It is a 12" x 12" oil on canvas called "Out of Darkness comes the Light" It was painted in 2008 for a show at Hampden Gallery on the UMass campus, but was also shown at Gallery in the Woods soon after. It dawned on me recently after bringing home the orb paintings that I have been painting them for a while now with out realizing it....in the nests (holes), the eggs, eyes, They are all related. The roots that I used to paint are now brain neurons....Interesting!!!

Today I put the last finishing coat of Galkyd onto the 2nd piece that was finished at Vermont Studio but mounted only recently. This was the 2nd painting in 3 that sold in early August and will be delivered along with "Anything is Possible". It is oil on paper mounted on a custom made cradle board measuring 20"x 48". I am still tring to figure out a name for it

"Anything is Possible" ~ Done!

Although this painting was started and almost finished while at Vermont Studio this July, I put on a few final touches of paint and finished it a few weeks later. It is called "Anything is Possible" an oil on paper mounted on board. The last few weeks have been about building custom cradle boards for it and several other pieces to mount on . I mounted this one last week and today I did the final coat of Galkyd to seal it. This painting sold during the first studio visit I had following my residency in August. I am happy to deliver it next week with the two other paintings that sold with it. I will post photos of the others on delivery day.

Central Gallery at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst presents, "The Robot Next Door", oil paintings and works on paper by Chris Blue Lamb Toubeau. Opening reception is on Friday, September 24th, from 5-7 PM. Gallery hours are from Monday thru Thursday, 3-6 PM and Sunday, 2-5PM. This is the first show of the season in a newly refurbished gallery located on the lower level, Wheeler House on Infirmary Way, Central Gallery

Chris Blue Lamb is a political artist who produces her current art in reaction to her views on contemporary life issues for a contemporary audience. Feeling art production is most valuable when it speaks to real experiences happening in the world, she researches what info is available and attempts to create a balance between the aesthetic and the political.

In her current work, she envisions robots as technology. Robots interacting with humans encourage the audience to empathize with those in positions of caretakers, soldiers, laborers and even lovers, when working under less-than-human practices. The effect of this interaction with machines on this level will change what it means to be human.

Toubeau’s oil paintings, journal pages and works on paper, use robots as a metaphor for future technological advances. By imaging our human interaction, She visually takes herself, and the viewer, into a world of working with, socializing with and having intimate contact with machines of the future.

Her undergrad work at Massachusetts College of Art in illustration/design and her recent explorations while at the MFA Program at Umass Amherst, Fine Art Grad School investigated the global economy's effect on human labor under exploitive conditions. This path fed her fascination with robots, as robotics are highly agreed upon to be the next world scale work force which will most likely replace most of third world human laborers. This led to visually describing our interaction with machines and cyborgs.

Vermont Studio Residency July 2010: Part 2 - My Studio

I enjoyed a large studio on the second floor of the Barbara White building while at Vermont Studio Center. I couldn't have picked a more perfect studio for myself!...I was very happy there and had wonderful artist neighbors that I will mention in another post.
These are some studio views which include some of the paintings I was working on while there.

I was interested in developing a new body of work based on Orbs. I think of them as the moment in time where dark matter in a field of potential is ignited into being..(transformed or birthed into matter) into our material universe....I have lots of ideas about Manifestation, Creation, and Divinity that I explore in my artwork.

Interestingly enough....In the afternoons on certain days...with a certain kind of light my studio had naturally occurring Orbs on the walls!!

Vermont Studio Residency July 2010: Part 1

I have been wanting to share about my trip to Vermont Studio Center but have been unable to organize my thoughts into one coherent blog post.......So I decided to do a few short posts with some of the highlights of my trip. The Red Mill building was the hub of life at VSC. It had a lounge, library, rec. room, dinning hall, kitchen, gallery, the office, and The small 3 bedroom apt.

where I stayed in room #1. It was an attic like room with slanty ceilings and felt reminiscent of my own A frame style house at home.

My studio was a short walk away in the Barbara White Building. I LOVED my studio!!!
And if I had been able to pick I would have chosen it myself. Weirdly again it had the same shape as my home studio...just bigger...Much bigger. It felt instantly like home to me and that was good because I spent most of my time there.

I was completely enamored with her work which is made from Sugar. Every morning before I went into the dining Hall I would check on the progress of her work...always changing and evolving as the sugar taffy dripped off the panels and into catch basins on the floor.

Here are a few photos from the show that I took. I have an affinity for things that I can look through to see the world differently and these just did it for me.....especially during the opening where I was able to view other people (figures) through them....and of course take photographs of them.

Papergirl 2010: a call for art

I participated in this project last year and had a wonderful experience! Plus....they throw a great artist reception/Show/Dance Party!

As you may/may not know, the open call for Papergirl 2010 is on and in full effect until August 31st. Last year we had over 100 artists participate, and distributed over 400 pieces of art work, this year, we want to break our record but we need your art!

The project goes like this: We collect any and all original works of art on paper until August 31st. In September (dates TBA) we will display the work for one week, wrap it up with a great big party, and the next day we will distribute all the work for free to people on the streets of NOHO via a team of cyclists.

• There are no size restrictions this year.
• Please no photocopies, or photographs of works in different mediums

(i.e. a photograph of a painting) although regular photography is completely acceptable.
• There are no restrictions in the number of pieces any one can submit,

and at least one piece from each artists will be represented in the exhibit.
-we will also work out a system so that additional submissions from the same artist can be seen,

but do know wall space is limited.
• The project is not limited exclusively to artists, there are no age restrictions and

anyone can mail us art work from any where in the world and it will be accepted.
-Feel free to spread the word to anyone you know who may be interested,

last year we had participants as young as 8 and as far away as France, we had everything from illustrations, to photography, to typography and everything in between. Lets make this year even bigger and better, blow our minds,(just make sure we can roll it up like a newspaper) and embrace the joy in taking a leap of faith in sharing your art for free with the community.

Starting in September we will be introducing a monthly artists shirt series, where each month a new artist will design 3 shirts which we will screen print ourselves on organic U.S. made shirts, they will be available on the website with 50 % of the proceeds going to the artists and the other 50% to help us become a little more sustainable.

My New Art Transportation Device

I must share this wonderful shelf that was made for me for my trip to Vermont Studio Center ....It was perfect and allowed me to fit all I needed (especially art supplies) into the car. All the artists who saw it were envious!! (Nice shelf! ....ha,ha) I have it stored in my art studio closet now and can use it again when traveling with art work for delivery to shows/galleries, home installations (sales), of future residencies that I may drive to.

The Gallery at Worcester State College is pleased to announce our first Call to Artists from the New England community for our fall show entitled In-Between

Since Robert Rauschenberg first produced his multimedia works called Combines in the 1950s, artists have never looked back in terms of combining sculpture, painting, and drawing. In-Between seeks submissions of artwork that combines one or more media or conceptually imagines in-between spaces, time, or identity. Assemblage, collage, sculpture combined with painting and drawing, photography combined with installations, or found objects combined with painting, drawing, or sculpture are just some of the possibilities. Artworks that think about space, time, or in-between sites may also reflect states of in-between.

Our first show dedicated to artists outside the College community will celebrate the Gallery’s future role in providing a venue for artists in the region and contribute to the growth of central Massachusetts as a culturally rich destination. Our Opening Reception date on Sept. 11th is also a celebration of the 136th anniversary of the founding of Worcester State College.

2 weeks and counting and I am off to Vermont Studio Center for the month of July.

I just received my first email that said "Dear July Resident"...and my stomach lurched with nerves and anticipation!...My supplies were ordered weeks ago and are now waiting in the studio. My ideas are solidifying and mock ups are being made. I am tying up all loose ends and finishing up current work....All to begin again, New work in a New place...How exciting!

The Drawing Project at Hampden Studio Gallery Space

This was a really wonderful project and I send out a special thank you to Anne LaPrade Seuthe and Kathleen Cammarata for putting it together.

The Drawing itself was a full body experience.
Being a collaboration, no ownership was involved....A sense of freedom and expansion was present for all the artists who participated (5 of us). For me, I found myself exploring the quality of line. I enjoyed being more expressive in my line work and less exacting. This felt like a big transformation for me. I am now inspired to explore in large drawing format...Maybe I will do one at Vermont Studio this July during my residency.

I have decided to add some close up photos of some mini compositions that were included into the bigger drawing. They were quite beautiful~

Day 1 of the Collaborative Drawing Project in Progress

The Hampden Studio Gallery Space is 3 walls, the 2 side walls are about 10 ft. long and 8 ft. high and the wall that connects them is about 25 ft long and also about 8 ft. high. Five artists led by Kathleen Cammarata met today for 7 hours to work on a large scale collaborative drawing project. These two images are my favorite parts of the drawing right now........but could change tomorrow!...We will be meeting again for another 5 hours (or so) to finish and will be presenting our creation at the Artist Reception from 5:30 to 7 pm. Sat night April 3rd.

I am excited to be participating in Hampden Gallery’s Collaborative Drawing Project. Kathleen Cammarata a Lowell artist will go over various collaborative drawing techniques with the participants. Hampden Studio Gallery will be ready for possibilities as it is covered with paper from top to bottom and then we will go for it!....Two days of work that will climax in an exhibition with an opening reception on Saturday April 3 from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm

Collaborative Drawing

When two or more artists work on the same drawing a new kind of imagery emerges. The artists give up ownership of the end product there by breaking new ground and discovering new aesthetic choices. The process is experimental. Participants will be moving around the room to engage in various parts of the drawing without completing a personal piece. No reference materials are necessary. A fertile imagination is very helpful

Gallery Walk marches in like a lion with special emphasis on art by students and women

BRATTLEBORO -- Gallery Walk, Brattleboro’s monthly first-Friday celebration of the arts, features 39 listed venues. A number of meet-the-artist receptions are included, and live music enhances the tour at several stops along the way. Other highlights include an early evening author event at The Book Cellar, the annual Student Art Month awards presentation for high school artists and the opening of the annual "Visions" art show at Hooker-Dunham Theater & Gallery to benefit the Women’s Crisis Center.

Official Gallery Walk hours are 5:30 to 8:30 p.m., although most venues are open earlier and several remain open later into the evening.

The 28-page March edition of the Gallery Walk guide and magazine contains complete listings and a map. This issue’s cover article is an interview with Helen Hawes. Other articles include information about River Gallery School’s 20th annual auction to raise scholarship funds, and Friends of Music at Guilford’s addition of a Women in Music component to the Women’s Crisis Center’s March fundraisers featuring film and art. Hampden Gallery's Collabrative Drawing Project & Exhibition

I first met artist Kathleen Cammarata a year or so ago at a visit to her X/O Studio in Lowell, MA

I really admired her drawing techniques which were rich and layered. I was excited to hear that she would be leading a Collaborative Drawing Project in conjunction with her solo show at Hampden Gallery on the UMass Campus and

am very pleased to be invited to participate in this project & exhibition.

LEYDEN -- A group of talented and tenacious artists has been meeting once a month for the past decade to share and display members' art -- and there seems to be no end in sight for the group.

Peggy Brown, current coordinator of the group, as well as a potter, photographer and writer, said Alicia Hunsicker, another Leyden artist, founded the group more than 10 years ago. Hunsicker is still a member.

''It's an informal group,'' said Brown. "We get together once a month, sometimes to share our art, sometimes to create art and sometimes just to talk about it.'' Brown said the whole idea of the group was to get creative people together to inspire and support each other.

The group consists of potters, painters, fiber artists, photographers, writers, illustrators and more.

Brown said membership fluctuates between 15 and 25 members.

''Sometimes two people will show up for a meeting and sometimes everyone will,'' said Brown.

The group gets together for trips to art museums, art walks, potluck dinners and to just sit in a garden and create.

Altered Target Project & Other Studio News

@ University Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I am very excited about this!

Info as follows:

The Altered Target Project is a juried exhibition where all the artists begin with identical authentic paper rifle targets, and alter them as they wish. The finished work must remain, in some way, a useable target.

We will provide each entrant with three official law enforcement silhouette targets (model B-27M, size 23 x 35 in.) to work from. Artists may paint, draw, print on, collage, cut, sew, project video, shoot at, or make any other creative alteration to the target.
Since the targets are not archival, framing is not essential, binder clips and pins will accommodate most installations. However, heavier finished work or sculptural work will require the usual support considerations.

It has been over fifty years since Jasper Johns presented his first target paintings. His rendition of the iconic circle target greatly influenced the Pop artists that followed. The human silhouette target was chosen for our exhibition because it has a versatile design with a bold central figure and ample margins. The B-27M should prove to be the perfect image to revisit the target in the 21st century.

There has already been overwhelming interest in the Altered Target Project on a local and national level....There are only 500 targets and they are getting claimed fast...

Exhibition plans include a large show with a national call for artists in the summer.

My current focus is working as a photographer/graphic designer with the Belly dance community.......I have also been taking belly dance classes with Attar (Whitney Suter) and have been enjoying the physicality. The next show I will be shooting at is the Valentine's Day show on the 14th @ the Northampton Center for the Arts.

So Life has been crazy of late........so many unexpected "new" experiences, connections, goals, and work. I feel that the universe has opened to show me many possibilities and paths.........and I have not quite been able to decide on a focus......except for the necessities! Winter's natural inward focus has also been powerful this year.

This is a new image that I am playing with (in progress) in my Eye explorations and my body mapping work within the Inherent Divinity series. It is a Maori Tattoo........they would map their life experiences with symbols tattooed on the face.

I am also working on several paintings and my figurative commission.

Tonight I will again be photographing a belly dance performance at the Northampton Center for the Arts. The performance starts a 7:30 and is open to the public. More info at http://www.attarbellydance.yolasite.com/

I will be attending the opening reception of my artist friend
Marcia Wise at the Jones Library in Amherst this Thursday, Jan 7th from 5 to 8 pm.

The beauty and mystery of Nature are at the core of my work. Whether working en plein air or in the studio, I am aware of the connection between art, spirit, and life. My focus is on color. I create visual brilliance by allowing the drama of light and color to shape my compositions while I experiment with color placement and color relationships. I begin with a sketch on prepared hardboard panels, and I apply the first layer of paint with brushes, creating a cohesive value study under-painting that serves as a value skeleton for successive applications of color. With a palette knife I apply one layer of paint at a time, while also scraping paint away, letting each layer dry between applications. I work toward a smooth finish on my surfaces, yet I want them to visually appear textured. Each layer of color is allowed to show through in the finished piece.

In my portrait work I crop the face closely with little or no background, often excluding the top of the head, hair, parts of chins, ears. I focus on the language of the eyes and the emotion they show. Sometimes the eyes pose a question or cause one to wonder what is being seen, thought, felt, or said. I love a deep, direct gaze. As I add and subtract paint, this process takes me out of time and deep within. It is there that I discover some part of myself within the intimate landscape of the other. This is the discovery that holds me captivated. Here I find glimpses of spirit within where any feelings of being separate fade into a sense of connection.

When I am painting landscapes and seascapes in oil, my process is the same as with the portraits. I am presently experimenting with bringing these subjects, as well as still life objects, into a closer cropped format as with the portraits. I also work in many layers of color when painting with pastels, but I do not scrape any color away. Pastel painting is a quicker process for me than oil painting so I enjoy this faster approach. I often take a pastel painting back to the studio and rework it into an oil painting.

I find the same mystery and self-discovery while painting the landscape, and most always work en plein air so I can experience a connection with the spirit of the land. It is this process, this inner journey that speaks to me. As I recreate Nature's beauty and mystery, I too, am recreated

I went out for New Year's Eve this year with my dancer friend Whitney Suter who hired me to do some photos of her belly dance troupe Tiamat. They danced at the Academy of Music in Northampton with lots and lots of other dancers and troupes. It was an interesting experience to be a fly on the wall (with a camera) behind the scenes with all the dancers getting ready to perform......for all non-professional dancers we've only seen scenes like that it in the movies (he,he). I took this photo, one of my favorites of the evening, of a hula hoop dance performance. After the show a few of the dancers and I went to an amazing restaurant Paul and Elizabeth's and enjoyed a spectacular Lobster Scallop Bisque!....along with vegetarian and seafood main courses. We walked the main streets following dinner and then went over to The Northampton Center for the Arts where we danced up a storm......rocking out to The Alchemystics, whose music is described as ......

So once again I am moon lighting as a belly dance photographer (I Love It!!)

Working within the Belly dance community reflects my desire to capture a moment of feminine beauty, elegance, and sensuality.

Who could ask for a better job.....These women are Gorgeous!! This is one of my favorite photos that I shot of Elise....simple and beautiful!

I will be doing Mini Portrait Shoots for $25. at the North Star shows for the next 6 months or so........Its a great deal! I will announce the next date when I know it.
